The qualifying process to become an ADI is broken into 3 parts:-

Part 1 (£81 test fee)

This is a multiple-choice theory test covering the Highway Code, road signs, rules of the road and also a Hazard Perception test using video clips to test your planning ahead skills.

Part 2 (£111 test fee)

This is a 1hr advanced driving test including an eyesight check, ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ vehicle safety questions, general driving ability, manoeuvres and independent driving.

Part 3 (£111 test fee)

A DVSA examiner will watch you give a client-centred driving lesson lasting about 45 minutes to a pupil, and they will look for evidence that you meet the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.

Training for the 3 parts involves the following options and costs:-

Go Green Instructor Training complete Parts 1, 2 & 3 course pack (£406...usually £478!)

The easy to follow course consists of comprehensive workbooks to use alongside a detailed library of training videos which leads you through the qualifying processes at your own pace.

Trainee PDI licence (£140 fee and lasts 6 months)

After passing your Part 2 you have the option to take out this ‘Pink Badge’ licence which enables you to teach real pupils and get paid for it! This then gives you valuable ‘on the job’ experience before taking your Part 3 test. Before applying, you must have had at least 40hrs of Part 3 training with your trainer (at least 10hrs of which must have been done in car) and then during the licence you must either be supervised for 20% of any lessons you give by your trainer or do at least a further 20hrs of Part 3 training with your trainer (25% of which must have been done in car).

DWDS training (£50 per hour)

Any training you want or need is simply charged at a flat rate. N.B. As part of the Go Green course, you have access to regular live zoom training.  These sessions, if watched live, can be counted towards your 40hrs/additional 20hrs explained above.

ADI licence (£300)

Once qualified, your ‘Green Badge’ ADI licence is renewable every 4 years.

Hopefully the above gives you an overview of what to expect when training with DWDS to be a Driving Instructor. If you haven’t already, check out https://www.gov.uk/become-car-driving-instructor for lots more information on the whole process.
